SAMUEL LEASK OF TOWNSEND, NORFOLK, ONTARIO

Samuel Leask (possible son) Of James Leask and Jane Sinclair was born about 1816 in Shetland, Scotland. He died on 15 Sep 1863 in Townsend, Norfolk, Ontario. He married Agnes Jamieson, daughter of ?Jamieson and Mary Ann (Jamieson), on 23 Dec 1850 in Townsend. Agnes was born about 1828 in Scotland and died on 02 Jan 1865 in Townsend.

Samuel Leask and Agnes (Nancy)Jamieson had the following children:
ROBERT ALEXANDER LEASK was born in 1851 in Townsend, Norfolk, Ontario.

SAMUEL LEASK was born in 1854 in Townsend, Norfolk, Ontario.

The records I have for Samuel are as follows:

Samuel married Agnes Jamieson in Townsend 1850.  Witnesses to the marriage were Robert Jamieson, (I assume a brother) and Jane (or James) Smith.  In the 1851 & 1861 census as well as Samuels will Agnes is referred to as Nancy. A google search showed Nancy can be a nickname for Agnes.

For a long time I could only find Samuel in the 1861 census.  Finally reading through the entire 1851 census I found him, last name spelled Leish.  This census reveals an interesting family grouping (I have included the id #’s from Tony Gott’s Shetland site):
  • Samuel Lisk  36  b. Scotland (i464566)
  • Nancy Lisk   24  b. Scotland (Agnes Jamieson i464568)
  • Charles Christie 10 b. Scotland (i78653)(son from Margaret Smith's 1st marriage to Robert Christie i78651 m. 23 Dec 1841 Bressay, Shetland)
  •   Robert A Lisk 1  b. Ontario (Samuel & Nancy’s son)
  • Arthur Slater 10 b. Scotland (son of Ann Jamieson & Arthur; he was also a witness on Samuel's will)
  • Lillias Jamieson 6  b. Scotland(probably Margaret’s daughter)
  • Margaret (Smith) Jamieson 32  Widow Scotland (Nancy’s sister-in-law
  • Mary Ann Jamieson 67 Widow Scotland(Nancy’s mother?)

The 1861 census shows
Samuel Leisk       45       Shetland
Nancy Leisk        43       Shetland
Alexander Leisk    9        Ontario
Samuel Leisk       7        Ontario
Marion Smith       75  Widow Shetland
(a widow, not sure of the connection)

Samuel's will (transcripton) of 1863 lists wife Nancy and children Robert Alexander and Samuel.  Nancy unfortunately died a few years later. She appointed the Presbyterian Minister of Jarvis to act as guardian to her children. If he declined she appointed Bartholomew Hair and Samson Baker. The Presbyterian Minister must have declined as Mr. Hair & Baker were the executors. Their document (transcription) gives the death dates for Samuel and Nancy; I don’t know what happened to the boys after their mother died.
