There were at least three generations of John Mills in the Grimsby and Windham area and not always a clear separation between each generation. I will try to clear up some of the confusion.
o John Mills I of Clinton (who should also be of Grimsby; he is in Sons & Daughters of American Loyalists as John of Clinton but his loyalist grants were in Grimsby); his son…
o John Mills II of Grimsby (but also of Windham) wife Permilla Seeley; their son…
o John Mills III of Grimsby (but also of Windham) wife Elizabeth Cline
Now to try and explain what I have sorted out with this family.
John II’s brother Parker appears to be the first of the John Mills of Clinton family to come to Canada: Parker applied for land in 1793 as a settler. He came with his wife’s family, the Ashbridges, and they all applied for land as settlers. Parkers wife’s family were Quakers.
John I (of Clinton/Grimsby) came to Canada about the same time as the above Ashbridges. John came with his wife and 4 of his children, probably Mary, Joseph, Richard and ?.
Although I will go into more detail later, John Mills II loyalist application was where the “Clinton” information came from in Sons & Daughters of American Loyalists. John Mills I’s loyalist grant of land was definitely in Grimsby.
