James Death Date - I Think the Only Undisputed Fact

James died d 9 Mar 1878 Palmerston, Ontario Aged 112 years 1 month and 28 days.

Cemetery in Palmerston, Ontario:

James Dickson d 9 Mar 1878 Aged 112 years 2 mos Native of Dublin, Ire.
Also his wife Margaret Wallace Died 1830 aged 55 years
also his wife Ester McComb d 7 Jan 1877 Aged 85 years Both native of Co. Down Ireland

About 1871 Palmerston began life as a railway town.  In December of 1876, the town purchased a ten-acre parcel of land to create a new cemetery. The latter was originally referred to as the Minto Township Cemetery but was later renamed the Palmerston Cemetery. In 1893 a public school was built on the site of the “Old” Palmerston Cemetery

When John Edwards Caswell visited the cemetery he discovered that the family plot was purchased by Sam Caswell in the new cemetery in Palmerston. The bodies were transferred from the old cemetery when the land was used for a school.

Was there some financial compensation for the transfer of bodies from the old cemetery?  Certainly this would explain why the fancy stone and why the burials took place ten years after their deaths.

Information about daughter Mary Jane was not included on the grave marker so my guess is that the marker was erected before her death in 1887.  If she provided the information for the marker then Dublin would be the most accurate information.  This would also explain why information about her mother Margaret Ann Wallis was included on the stone.

“He passed away in his sleep 9 Mar 1878 in Palmerston, Ontario, after taking a two mile walk the previous day and lies in the family plot in the Palmerston Cemetery with a shaft of red granite at his head.”

As you can see from my posts about James Dickson, I have asked more questions than provided answers.  Perhaps someone has information that can answer some of my questions.
