Robert Henry Styles
Robert Styles left his
native Ireland and migrated to Canada about 1850. He met Margaret in the Muskoka area of
Ontario and here they settled. Robert was
a grain farmer. Looking for a better
living the Styles family left Canada and entered the US at Portal, North Dakota
in June 1887.(1) They first lived at Devil’s Lake in the
northeast, then moved to Williston, near the point where the Missouri River
crosses the Montana border. About 1894 they settled in Truax, North Dakota
after having lived in the Williston area.
The site they selected along Long Creek had been abandoned by an early
squatter named Charlie Gaines. Robert
built a log cabin near a spring which had the claim of having the best water in
the area. Robert & Margaret’s children
grew up in the Williston area. In time
Robert filed on this land, proved it up in 1906 and the Styles family became
prominent ranchers.
Robert & Margaret’s
children
In
season, Robert would shear sheep for neighbouring ranchers. When it came time to sell cattle he would
trail them the 15 to 20 miles to railroad points and ship them to the St Paul
or Chicago stockyards. A member of the
family would ride along in the “caboose” of the train to be there at the
stockyards when the cattle were sold. Robert
also worked on the construction of the Great Northern Railroad. One interesting job the boys did was to
collect buffalo bones for a soap factory.
The children had great
respect for their father and affectionately called “Governor” instead of
Father. In 1908, after his wife died, he
and members of his family moved to Saratoga, California, and he lived there
until his death.
