SAMUEL OAKLEY

 

Samuel Oakley

Samuel was born the 20th of May 1833 in Manchester, England.  By the 1851 census he was listed as a joiner and was 17.  Samuel was only 22 when his parents, Robert & Elizabeth, passed away.  On his own, he moved to Canada, settling in the Kingston area.   Were there relatives in Kingston and that is why Samuel chose that area?

I found a mention of Sam in the Daily British Whig, Kingston (1 Aug 1855):

 "Steamer Niagara, Lewiston - 2 chests luggage, S. Oakley"

Obviously his luggage had arrived! I did find a ships passenger list that could be our Samuel but the occupation listed - a mason - was inconsistent with his carpentry background.  The manifest was from the ship, the "London".  The ship had travelled from London and arrived in New York, 9 July 1855.

  Samuel initially settled in Kingston, Ontario – most likely connected to the railroad as a carpenter.  By 1859 Samuel married Mary Ann Nobes and he entered into a period of some stability.

IN MANCHESTER

Robert, son of Samuel Oakley and Ann Bayley was born in Bunbury, and baptised on the 23 of Jun 1794.  I have not been able to find anything about Robert's early life except that he was a builder. Family stories mentioned he was an architect others that he was a land surveyor.  His death certificate listed him as an inspector of buildings.

    In 1821 Robert married Elizabeth Thomas in Tregynon, Wales.  Fortunately a cousin of my mothers had Robert & Elizabeth's marriage record, one of the items Sam brought with him when he moved to Canada.  Without this document I would never have been able to connect Sam to Robert & Elizabeth.

    Tregynon is a small village in Montgomeryshire.  I am not sure how they met as the distance from Bunbury to Tregynon although only 1 ½ hours by car, in 1821 that would be quite a trek.  Did Robert meet Elizabeth in Tregynon, or just return there for their wedding?  Robert and Elizabeth eventually settled in Manchester. 

     I have found the following mention of Robert in a few records but can't account for his time between his marriage and the birth of his son Samuel:

-         1833 birth of son 13 Thomas Street, Chorlton Row

-       In the 1841 census they were living in Ardwick Township, Chorlton which is part of the greater Manchester area.  Coincidentally they were living on Robert Street

-        In the 1851 census the Oakleys are living at 37 Chapel Street, New Accrington, again part of the greater Manchester area:

    Trying to figure out Robert's movements proved more challenging than I expected.  Still puzzling over the marriage in Wales I used the Manchester tax lists to see if I could piece together his arrival in Manchester.  There appears to be at least 2 if not 3 Robert Oakley's in the Chorlton area.  When Sam was born, the family was living at 13 Thomas Street.  This would eliminate the Robert on Mansell St.  I am not sure if he is the Robert that moved every couple of years or not.

    I have many times discarded a re-added the newspaper article of a bankruptcy of a builder in Shrewsbury in 1834.  Could this be our Robert?  Did he move his family to Manchester in 1833 and lose the business he had in Shrewsbury?  

    He is probably the Robert living at 4 Thomas St in 1836 but the next official address is the 1841 census when the family was living on Robert St in Ardwick.  In the 1851 census they were living at 37 Chapel St, New Accrington and they remained there until Roberts death in 1854.

    I imagine with Roberts death this changed the financial circumstances for Elizabeth and Samuel, thus necessitating a move to Blackburn St. in Old Accrington.

    Another puzzle is the gap between Robert and Elizabeth's marriage and Sam's birth, about 12  years.  Were there other children that did not survive?  I will write more about this in another post, but one of the paintings Sam brought to Canada was of a young girl, possibly his sister.  

    Also puzzling is who the older couple were in two of the paintings Sam brought with him.  Robert and Elizabeth's granddaughter Sarah (Powell) referred to the portrait of the female as "Great Grandmother Melting".  This would make them Elizabeth's parents.

    Robert died the 26th of August 1854 from effusion into the cavity of chest.   His wife Elizabeth passed away December 21st from ulceration of the stomach.  Elizabeth and presumably Samuel were now living at 123 Blackburn Road in Old Accrington.

    I did find a short obit for Robert in The Guardian (Preston, England Sept 2, 1854)

                        On Saturday Inst, Mr. Robert Oakley, of Accrington, aged 60

            Robert and Elizabeth are buried in the Christ Church graveyard in Accrington.  Mom's cousin Betty Brault provided a copy of the inscription on their grave:

To the memory of Robert Oakley of Chapel Street, New Accrington

who departed this life the 26^th day of August 1854, age 60 years,

also of Elizabeth his wife who departed this life the

21^st day of December 1854, age 62 years.

Be warned by my sudden call that for you for death prepare lest it should come to you know not the manner how or where.

    With his parents deaths Samuel packed up and emigrated to Canada in May of 1855.

IN BUNBURY, CHESHIRE

 

Long before we had Ancestry, I wrote to the Cheshire Record office for more information.  Family stories gave Manchester as Samuel's place of birth - this led me to the 1851 census where I learned that Samuel's father Robert’s was born in Bunbury and his approximate age.  With this information the Record Office sent me Roberts birth record.  This provided Robert's fathers name – Samuel.  Over time I have pieced this family together.

John Oakley is our earliest known Oakley ancestor.  Searching through the parish records for Bunbury, I found only one Oakley family, and although I do not have direct proof that this is our line, I feel certain that the family of John Oakley is ours.  Following this family forward I found son Samuel, who was the father of our Robert Oakley, and Robert's son the first Samuel in Canada.

I also found three children for John Oakley in the Cheshire records - Samuel (1750), Martha (1755) and Ann (1764).  

 Samuel (the grandfather of our Samuel who came to Canada) married twice, his first wife Mary died July 14^th 1776.  Samuel then married Ann Bayley (1779).  On the marriage licence Samuel was listed as a widower and both Samuel and Ann were 21.

From the 1831 tax assessment there was a reference to Samuel Oakley’s residence.  He was leasing a house & gardens from Sir Thomas Champneys.

Samuel and Ann had a number of children – Jane Charlotta b. 1784; Ann b. 1786; John b. 1789; Robert b. 1794; Kitty b. 1796; Samuel b. 1798; Rebecca b. 1802.  All children were born in Bunbury.

 I came across apprenticeship records dated 1789.  Samuel was a master carpenter and this record shows the name of the apprentice Samuel was training.  This skill with wood was passed on to his son Robert and grandson Samuel.

Our descent is from Samuel’s son Robert who was baptized the 23 of June 1794:

MY OAKLEY FAMILY - ENGLAND TO BRITISH COLUMBIA WITH LOTS OF STOPS IN BETWEEN

 

As I have started so many of my family stories I again have to mention how fortunate I was to have started my research in the early 70’s.  The stories I was told by the many relatives I contacted helped me unravel a particularly tangled family history.

This is mainly about my 2x great grandfather Samuel Oakley.  At the age of 23 and shortly after his parents death in 1854, Sam packed up his worldly goods and settled in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.  And thank goodness for what he packed – 4 portraits and his parents marriage document.  I’m sure there were other treasures as well but 160 years later I tracked down what I could.

Both the Vancouver & the Kamloops Oakleys were very generous in sharing the bits of information they had about the family.  I was told Sam’s father was a land surveyor or an architect.  I found out Sam was from Manchester, England but was somehow connected to Norfolk, Virginia.  I was given a copy of his marriage certificate to his first wife Mary Nobes.  Then the story became a bit more confusing – Sam married the widow of a Nobes – the blended family were cousins.  Again this took me a while to figure out.  After his second wife died Samuel married Anne Young, the aunt of a daughter-in-law (still not sure who). Anne would not move west when Sam decided to move to Vancouver.  Not much to go on but more than I had on some of my lines.  Thus began the process of discovering Sam’s story.

Where to start…in the middle I suppose with the wedding document Sam brought from England.  From this I now had the name of his parents (Robert Oakley & Elizabeth Thomas), their marriage date and place of marriage (Tregynon, Wales).  Sam was from Manchester so I began there, searching the 1851 census – Robert was from Bunbury in Norfolk and Elizabeth from Tregynon – I had the right family and a place to search for the Oakleys.
